Electronics and advanced manufacturing

Originally a number of electronics companies were brought to Great Yarmouth to avoid the Blitz during the Second World War, but since then there has been a steady rise in the number of companies developing products  that have a significant technological impact across a range of industry sectors. Today a niche cluster of companies providing electronic and advanced manufacturing products and services operate in Great Yarmouth with their applications being used all over the world supporting a wide range of industries including automotive, IT, defence, space and aviation.

Itron was founded in 1967 by Dr T Nakamura and has developed from being the first supplier of calculator VFD displays to the leading manufacturer of CIG driver VFD displays. It is a member of the Noritake group which specializes in ceramic based products within electronics applications among others. The company typically produces 3000 VFD displays or 500 modules per year for the audio-visual, industrial, point of sale, IT-communication, vending, cooking, amusement gaming, security, transportation, automotive and medical markets.

API Capacitors is the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of high quality power capacitors for power electronic applications. Their range of filter, snubber and energy storage capacitors services the professional markets of traction, industrial drives, power conditioning and avionics, together with discharge capacitors for medical, plasma and pulsed power applications. The company is a privately owned independent British company formed in 1986 as part of a management buyout from Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd and is now the largest specialist manufacturer of power capacitors in the UK.

Gall Thomson is the world’s leading authority on the application, design and supply of Marine Breakaway Couplings (MBC). These couplings enable the safe transfer of hazardous and non-hazardous liquids and gases and dramatically reduce the risk of spillage. The company has  more than 35 years experience in delivering safe offshore liquid product transfer solutions and is the proven global leader in the design, manufacture and application of anti-pollution and safety marine breakaway couplings.

Proserv, a production technology and services company for the global energy industry, specialises in the engineering, manufacture and installation of subsea communications and controls, offering its customers a wide range of products and services for the entire oilfield lifecycle.

Another major company in Great Yarmouth is SEACON, a manufacturing company which makes and supplies an extensive and diverse range of electrical, optical and hybrid connectors assemblies, submersible switches and cable system solutions for many applications within the oceanographic, oil and gas, defence and environmental sectors.

Specialist oil well and equipment manufacturer NOV Hydra Rig has expanded its operations in Great Yarmouth in recent years, taking on a 30,000 sq ft facility at Beacon Park, within the Enterprise Zone. The company is the world's leading manufacturer of coiled tubing, nitrogen and snubbing equipment. 

API Technologies Corp overlooked by Nelson’s monument on the South Denes peninsular, is proud of its 70-year pedigree in the design, development and manufacture of microelectronic modules and subsystems for harsh environments. The company supplies the global aerospace, defence, oil and gas and space markets, concentrating its efforts in harsh environment, high reliability and safety critical applications – more recently providing Ultra High Temperature operating modules capable of functioning reliably at 225°C.

Placepower UK Ltd designs and manufactures test equipment and factory automation from Great Yarmouth, serving the manufacturing and production needs of the electronic, automotive and pharmaceutical industries for over two decade. Placepower is well known for its innovative product development, stimulated by close working relationships with its customers who themselves are leaders in their market sector.
