Invest: Culture and Heritage

Great Yarmouth has a fabulously rich cultural heritage dating back way beyond its King John Charter of 1209 – and the borough continues to be a vibrant place to live, work and visit.

The borough hosts a varied and growing calendar of cultural events. The Maritime Festival on historic South Quay with shanty folk music and ships, highlights the borough’s links to the sea as a modern energy hub and a former merchant, navy and herring fishing port. The Out There Festival of International Circus and Street Arts is a wild and wacky two day festival, featuring cosmopolitan acrobats and fantastical comedy sketches performed on the streets and in St. George’s Park celebrating the town’s diverse entertainment culture.

Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival

Great Yarmouth retains a fantastic built heritage, including a Roman fort, 12th century Minster Church, the second most complete medieval town wall in England, a medieval street pattern and a cosmopolitan Georgian quarter. Both English Heritage and the National Trust have museums in the area.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has invested more than £10m here in the last decade alone.

The borough is also home to large swathes of the Broads National Park, with opportunities for sailing, canoeing, birdwatching and walking, with more than 30,000 visitors per year arriving by boat.
