Invest: Energy Great Yarmouth

England's energy sector capital

Businesses based in Great Yarmouth are ideally placed to capture opportunities and investment arising from the world’s biggest offshore wind farm projects.

Great Yarmouth has been England’s main offshore energy base ever since BP’s drilling rig Sea Gem discovered gas in the Southern North Sea in 1965, evolving into an experienced marine energy supply chain of more than 250 businesses, including many global operators.

Offshore Wind

The Statoil UK Wind Energy Centre opened on the river port in 2016, servicing both the construction and ongoing operations of the £1.5bn Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm.

It is also the control room for Statoil’s Hywind Scotland Pilot Park, a floating wind farm off Aberdeenshire.

Port of Great Yarmouth

Peel Ports bought the port in 2015 and completed a £7m co-investment with Siemans to prime the Outer Harbour to support construction of the world’s largest offshore wind farms.

It is the chosen assembly and installation base for both the £1.5bn Galloper (innogy SE) and £2.5bn East Anglia ONE (ScottishPower Renewables) offshore wind farms, with huge opportunities on the horizon.

Decommissioning Hub

Veolia-Peterson operates a £1m decommissioning facility at the Outer Harbour, with ambitions to establish Great Yarmouth as the centre for decommissioning for the Southern North Sea.

The facility enables topside, jackets and subsea equipment to be offloaded for dismantling and recycling

Enterprise Zone

Great Yarmouth is the chosen headquarters of Seajacks, which operates the world’s largest and most advanced self-propelled jack-up vessels. From their bespoke base on the Enterprise Zone at South Denes, close to the Outer Harbour, Seajacks supports multi-billion-pound offshore projects around the globe and is committed to using local suppliers.

Energy business Proserv is expanding in Great Yarmouth within a new £7.7m landmark headquarters on the leading Enterprise Zone site at Beacon Park. Serving as a global hub and centre of excellence for subsea communication and controls, Artemis House is one of the largest commercial buildings ever constructed in the borough.
