Exciting events in the village resort of Hemsby
Hemsby has an strong village community that comes together on several fantastic occasions to stage a number of great events for local residents and visitors.
Hemsby Longshore Herring Festival
Held annually in August, the distinct smell of local Hemsby herring cooked in rolled oats and beef dripping wafts across the beach during the festival, held as a celebration of the Yarmouth area’s important fishing traditions and heritage. Cooked in the traditional manner over open air barbecue fires, local cooked herring is a fundamental part of Hemsby Lifeboat’s annual herring festival as the lifeboat crew get their aprons on to serve up the fish.
The Longshore Herring Festival also includes some fun activities from the East Anglian Working Newfoundland dogs, an auction, tombolas, a raffle, games, model trucks for the children to play on, music, refreshments, cake stalls and a bar to attract a huge crowds
Hemsby Lifeboat Day
Another fun day hosted by the Hemsby Inshore Lifeboat crew, highlighting their work and that of the other local emergency services, including the Winterton & Gorleston Coastguard teams, lifeboat colleagues at Gorleston, Caister and Sea Palling, RNLI Lifeguards and Norfolk Constabulary Broads Beat team.
Several of the crews put on fantastic displays in the water, showing just what they are trained to do - an essential part of life near the sea.
The day always includes a variety of stalls, food and drink, music and live bands until 10pm and finishes with a fireworks display at 10pm.
The yearly fun day puts the lifeboat and their work on show, but also is an important fundraising exercise for the volunteer crew.
Summer holidays mean Tuesday nights are fireworks nights in the village resort of Hemsby and Newport. Funded by the Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area Ltd, and run by the Hemsby & Newport Traders group, this is a great summer event for everyone to enjoy.
Huge crowds gather in Hemsby to enjoy all the fun on Beach Road,there's often live music at The Lacon Arms, and at 10pm a fantastic fireworks display lights up the sky.
