The Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival celebrates our maritime heritage past and looks forward to our maritime future. Great Yarmouth is bursting at the seams with maritime history and architecture from Row Houses to herring industry Smoke Houses, churches and boats.
Enjoy a fabulous heritage weekend with six museums to explore, including the award winning Time and Tide museum and the remains of two Roman forts, you can trace Great Yarmouth's fascinating history along the Medieval town wall to Fisherman's Alms Houses via the old gaol. Admiral Lord Nelson was a frequent visitor to the busy port, where wealthy merchants built their houses.
As you're walking round the resort, look up over shop and amusement façades and admire some stunning architecture, dating back hundreds of years, with ornate carvings and embellishments, architrave and decoration.
Guided heritage walks start regularly from the beautiful 12th century St. Nicholas Church at the northern end of the Market Place. Or, for a more chilling version of local history, try an Eerie Walk on a fine summer evening.
Heritage Open Days takes place the week after the Maritime Festival from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 September 2012. There are loads of FREE buildings to explore and tours to go on. Click here for more information.
