Broads and Countryside Villages

Hundreds of visitors every year sail along the Broads though the Borough of Great Yarmouth. From the north, boats can cruise along the rivers Thurne and Bure, past Thurne, Acle and Stokesby through beautiful countryside dotted with windmills to Great Yarmouth. Martham Broads are inaccessible by broads cruiser or sailing boat, but there is a walk along the edge of the nature reserve.

Great Yarmouth Yacht Station, run by the Broads Authority is next to Great Yarmouth's north-west tower, just a short walk from Great Yarmouth town centre.

To the south, visitors can sail past St. Olaves and Fritton and on to Burgh Castle at the conflux of the River Yare and the River Waveney and along to Breydon Water where the sunsets are just stunning. The lovely Berney Arms Windmill, which is accessible only by foot, train or boat, is just before the conflux of the Rivers Yare and Waveney and is well worth a look if you happen to be sailing past on a Monday in July or August.

Click here for our Broads Village Guide with information about day boat hire, mooring, fishing, riverside pubs and bike hire.

The pretty villages of Filby, Rollesby and Ormesby surround the famous Trinity Broads, five standalone but interlinked Broads which are a haven for wildlife and birdlife. A wooden board walk at Filby is easily accessible to everyone. There are plenty of longer walks taking in a number of villages and beautiful Broads views all over the area.

Fritton Decoy is part of Fritton Lake Countryworld, another land-locked Broad to the south of the Borough, great for fishing all year round.
