Drama groups to bring horror and comedy to Great Yarmouth

Stage versions of a horror comedy musical and a TV sitcom favourite are aiming to kick start amateur dramatic groups for all ages at a Great Yarmouth theatre.
St George’s Theatre is showcasing “am dram” productions of Little Shop of Horrors and The Vicar of Dibley from north Norfolk in a bid launch youth and adult groups in the town.

People are busy creating carved pumpkins for a display and prize competition which last year attracted 70 entries when the event made its debut.
Pumpkinanza, on Wednesday October 26, also features a free fireworks display, entertainment from the Heart Roadshow, and “horrid history” storytelling.

Spooky squashes will light up Great Yarmouth seafront when a pumpkin competition puts a smile on the face of Halloween on 26 October 2016. And the family event is now looking for creative carvers to make the illuminated characters who are the stars of the show. Pumpkinanza was launched last year and saw 70 entries for an event now hailed as Norfolk’s biggest pumpkin carving competition.

Racing car legends to star at seafront festival

Historic racing cars that put Norfolk at the front of the Formula 1 grid are heading to Great Yarmouth seafront. Famous fast and furious machines from the Classic Team Lotus collection are the stars in the town’s Wheels Festival on the weekend of September 3rd and 4th. There is also wheels action in the Market Place, with BMX bike jumps, choreographed routines and a mountain bike trail show from the Extreme Wheels Roadshow’s Pro Action Sports team.

Each week until the end of August the boom, crackle and colour of towering rockets will entertain big crowds on the seafronts at Great Yarmouth and Hemsby. The Great Yarmouth events also feature two hours of live entertainment beforehand on the Sealife Centre Gardens.

Gorleston seafront hosts top beach volleyball action

Top volleyball aces served up sporting action on the golden sands of Gorleston-on-Sea at the weekend. The resort hosted the opening round of the Volleyball England Beach Tour, with 46 competitors – some of them national players – putting their spiking and blocking skills to the test.

England pair and last year’s women’s champions Vicky Palmer and Jessica Grimson won the women’s competition with Christoph Datler and Mark Baechli taking the men’s crown.

The all-action summer sport of Beach Volleyball returns to the sands of Norfolk this month as Gorleston-on-Sea beach becomes the battleground for top teams when the Volleyball England Beach Tour heads to the resort.The tour has visited the Great Yarmouth area for the past 12 years, providing holidaymakers and locals with a chance to get close to the stars. Two-person teams from across the country, including some international players, will compete in first of five rounds as the tour visits a handful of iconic seaside locations.

Crowds replace crows as village gets scary

An artful army of crafty characters is preparing for its annual friendly invasion of a Norfolk holiday village. A hundred scarecrows will line the streets, gardens and green at Martham near Great Yarmouth during the May Bank Holiday. And this year organisers are opening up the event to scarecrow makers from outside the village for the first time – with the lure of a £100 cash top prize. Designers or businesses will be able to showcase their creations on the green to be seen on May 1st and 2nd by an estimated 10,000 visitors – three times the population of the village.

Top young sailors ahoy

A trans-Atlantic seafaring hero is helping to launch a national regatta's maiden voyage to a Norfolk beach this summer. A fleet of 400 school-age sailors will head to Gorleston-on-Sea in July to compete in a week-long series of tough seafaring tests run by the National Schools Sailing Association. The national regatta alternates between inland and sea venues. It sees youngsters aged from 10 to teenagers representing their home counties, competing in a range of solo and double-hander dinghies.

Celebrate everything pumpkin in Greater Yarmouth, during October half term, with the borough’s first Pumpkinanza, supported by Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area (GYTABIA).There’s a special pumpkin trail (October 31 and November 1), pumpkin carving competition (October 28) and fireworks on the seafront (October 28), along with extra pumpkin fun and Halloween events and activities at businesses throughout the borough, from October 24 to November 1.
