Circus, Clowns and Catastrophe. Heritage Guided Walk - Special

A free show in Great Yarmouth pulls the crowds today as much as it did nearly two hundred years ago. In 1845 jostling for a better view suddenly led to a struggle for life when hundreds of spectators plunged into the cold waters of the River Bure while watching a clown’s stunt.

In this ‘holiday walk' led by one of our trained guides, visit the places associated with the catastrophe and find out how, where and why it happened, who the personalities and victims were, how the residents of Great Yarmouth and citizens of England reacted and the legacy it left behind.

This walk will then follow a route through the town and finish in St. George's Park at the Mermadelica Fountain Bar, an example of how Great Yarmouth still works closely with architects and artists and how circus is still very much a part of daily life.

We may also have available a copy of the original Nelson the Clown poster available to be seen, kindly loaned by the Hippodrome Circus.
