The Market Place is at the heart of the shopping area but is also the hub for a wealth of heritage attractions including St Nicholas Church, probably the largest parish church in England, which was built originally in the 1100’s and then re-built in the 1950’s following extensive damage caused by bombing during the Second World War.
The Market Place has been the site of a Market for over 800 years.
The birthplace of Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, stands almost next to the church and across the road you’ll find the restored Fishermen’s Hospital, which was built in 1702 as almshouse for “decayed” fishermen who had fallen on hard times.
