Flipside decorates the town

Watertight Words

Today marks the launch of the first pop-up installations under the Watertight Words project being delivered by Flipside. The cultural animations are linked to Lowestoft’s flood risk management programme and are being displayed on the former Town Hall.

The artworks are a result of workshops taking place throughout February, March and May, where Flipside engaged with 1,431 young people. During these workshops audio visual materials were used to explore, through the use of language and poetry, people’s responses to the sea, its history of flooding and what building the new extensive flood wall will mean.

Going forward further displays will pop up around the town, being used at festivals, events and the library. The final part of Watertight Works will see a typographic designed, derived from the project, being engraved in a glass section of the sea defence wall once completed.

Watertight Works encompasses the true spirit of the Making Waves Together programme, working towards educating young people and increase cultural awareness, working collaboratively with other partners and external companies and creating a legacy that can be taken forward. The Lowestoft Town Council are already looking to continue having rolling artwork at the former town hall as a result of the project.
