The Grit Teaching Resource

The Grit

We are delighted to announce Poetry People will be joining the team at Lowestoft Maritime Museum for the launch of their exciting new Key Stage 2 teaching resource investigating the historic Lowestoft beach village known as The Grit. With lots of suggestions for activities and learning projects, this is a substantial addition to the suite of local history teaching resources which will be showcased at the twilight CPD on 30th April.

As you may already be aware, last year Poetry People ran a hugely successful Heritage Lottery funded project, The Grit. Dean Parkin, Naomi Jaffa and Becky Marshall-Potter worked with 224 pupils at eight Lowestoft primary schools – three sessions with each class, including a trip to the Maritime Museum. The project inspired great interest in their town’s heritage as well as a new sense of pride, and prompted conversations between children and older family members about life on Lowestoft’s almost forgotten beach village. Here’s a link to the short evaluation film about the work in schools:http://bit.ly/gritschools.

The Grit project recently received a National Creative Learning Award in the ‘Literature & Creative Writing’ category and one of the main legacies is this new Key Stage 2 resource. Another is the series of video poems, two of which feature the voices of primary school children and lyrics they produced during their Grit sessions. http://bit.ly/gritclimbingup and http://bit.ly/gritcobblestones.

As well as finding out about The Grit on Tuesday 30th April and receiving a free copy of the Key Stage 2 resource, you will be able to explore Ben’s Quest treasure chest of original maritime artefacts and accompanying backpack of outside navigation and observation activities.

Light refreshments will be provided.
