originalprojects works with the communities, industries and heritage of Great Yarmouth to create, uncover, support and promote cultural assets. They started their work in Great Yarmouth with a pilot project in 2016, curating a day-trip to explore the cultural ecology of the town along with events and an exhibition, where artists responded to themes connected to Great Yarmouth.

In 2017 originalprojects fully launched and soon occupied two spaces on King Street. One allows them to have an exhibition space and the other to work with local people to create new cultural assets based around art, craft and design.

Making Waves Together

The organisation leads on the delivery of the Great Yarmouth Expo in the Making Waves Together, which allows people to nominate what is ‘great’ about Great Yarmouth and to identify new cultural assets within the town.

“Being part of Making Waves Together and the Great Place Scheme has been an amazing opportunity for us to connect with local organisations with similar aims, and to engage with people across different communities and explore ways of working together.

We have developed Great Yarmouth EXPO as a project to trial different ways of producing new cultural assets based on what already exists here - connecting artists from elsewhere with people who live here to uncover stories and hidden treasures, and finding ways to make something new and exciting from them that can help support, promote and strengthen the great things that are already happening here.

This has manifested through music and food events with the local Portuguese speaking communities, exhibitions connecting local artists with visiting ones, workshops that share skills and create new products (working towards regular art, craft and design fairs) and projects that help us share extraordinary local work, like Mark Potton's photographs of trains that have been worked into a 55 metre long frieze at Great Yarmouth train station.

We feel that our work is slowly building towards a critical mass, attracting new creative organisations to work here. For example we are collaborating with the Norfolk and Norwich Sonic Arts Collective on YARMONICS, a new sonic arts festival for Great Yarmouth, and bringing together a creative community that can work together to create a sustainable space and ongoing outcomes.” – Kaavous Clayton, originalprojects artist-curator
