The Making Waves Together impact

Untold Tales

The spring and summer months have seen a flurry of activities for the Making Waves Together team and partners. The activities taking place have had a real impact on the local communities in both Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft and are leading to sustainability beyond the project.

On 4th July the Marina Theatre held Untold Tales, which was attended by 156 children and adults. To put this production on the Marina Theatre worked with eight schools in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, delivering workshops for 438 pupils and received over 150 completed scripts for consideration.

The project gained the support of the Ink Festival, who offered prizes to the winning plays that were performed.

Due to the success of Untold Takes, the theatre is now exploring the possibility of an adult playwriting project for 2018/19, with an ambition to link in with the High Tide Festival.

The Marina Theatre has had further success recently through staging Oliver! - A Community Musical with their venue partner The Seagull Theatre. The Marina Theatre says the project “Was a historical production as the venues had never worked together before. Seagull Theatre has rehearsal facilities and we have a bigger stage, so it was a great way to utilise assets.”

They continued - “It was a huge undertaking, we all learnt a lot and made some mistakes, but the staff from both venues benefitted enormously. We knew fairly early in rehearsals that we had something special – the cast were all local – but the reaction from Lowestoft and the surrounding area was phenomenal. It was a sell-out smash. We had a waiting list, queues out of the door for returns on the night, and the entire community was right behind it”.

Making and producing culture is a key element of the Making Waves Together and partner originalprojects; has worked with nearly 1,000 participants to date, over a range of projects in Great Yarmouth.

Recently they have successfully linked up with Norwich and Norfolk Sonic Arts Collective to gain funding from the Arts Council England to deliver YARMONICS. This is a sonic arts festival taking place in Great Yarmouth on 21st and 22nd September, originalprojects; have accredited the Making Waves Together project for enabling this further investment to happen.
