Racing car legends to star at seafront festival

Historic racing cars that put Norfolk at the front of the Formula 1 grid are heading to Great Yarmouth seafront. Famous fast and furious machines from the Classic Team Lotus collection are the stars in the town’s Wheels Festival on the weekend of September 3rd and 4th. There is also wheels action in the Market Place, with BMX bike jumps, choreographed routines and a mountain bike trail show from the Extreme Wheels Roadshow’s Pro Action Sports team.

Nostalgia steams and sails into Great Yarmouth on September 10th and 11th when the annual Maritime Festival moors up with a fleet of fascinating vessels.East Anglians will revel in the return of the Regal Lady pleasure boat to the port where she was built and the local waterways where she took thousands of trippers on fun voyages. She is among an armada of guest ships which includes historic sailing and military ships, and lifeboats.

Mystery of godly eyes staring over golden sands

Sea god Neptune stares out to the waves at a Norfolk beach in a piece of artwork that is mystifying locals. The bearded face, another figure and a fish, are carved into a wooden post at a sea defence groyne on Gorleston beach just south of Great Yarmouth. But no-one knows whether the creations are the work of a modern day “Banksy of the Breakwaters”, or date back to when the defences were built more than 40 years ago.

A rare chance to step on board a modern offshore support vessel is among the attractions at Great Yarmouth’s Maritime Festival. The stunning looking 83m-long offshore Service Operation Vessel with an airliner-shaped sleek “nose” is owned by Danish shipping company Esvagt. A dozen people at a time will be able to go on board.

Open days’ window into history

Roman soldiers are marching back to Burgh Castle fort, the best-preserved Roman ruin in East Anglia just outside Great Yarmouth for a special event celebrating the area’s rich heritage. It is part of a busy Heritage Open Days programme, A series of tours and events runs from Thursday September 8 to Sunday September 11 enabling visitors to get an in depth look at many aspects of the area’s bygone days.

Great Yarmouth’s holiday and tourism industry united today to send a message to holidaymakers and visitors planning to head to the resort: We’re open as normal.
Businesses and attractions along the Golden Mile and across the town centre are all working as usual today after a major fire in the early hours destroyed a bowling centre and indoor market on Regent Road.
