New Great Yarmouth Air Show takes off as dates announced

Great Yarmouth Air ShowGreat Yarmouth, one of the UK’s top holiday resorts has announced the dates for its first ever air show. The Great Yarmouth Air Show will take place between 15 and 18 June 2017 and is ready for take-off to be one of the biggest events in East Anglia.

Organisers aim to stage an all-action event which will attract up to 300,000 people and give a £10m-plus boost to the local economy in its debut year.

It is being staged by Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area Ltd as part of its drive to bring more visitors and spending power to the borough.

The air show, featuring two evening and two afternoon display sessions, aims to feature military and civilian displays.

It was launched today with flurry of air display action as the Twister Duo team performed smoke-trailing aerobatics in front of an audience of invited guests on the clifftop at Potters Resort at Hopton-on-Sea.

Air show director Asa Morrison said the show aimed to be one of the UK’s top five air shows within five years – alongside established events at Bournemouth, Sunderland and Eastbourne.

It is set to become the biggest event in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk and East Anglia, giving the resort the chance to showcase itself, and bring a major economic boost for the area.

Aerial displays are planned for Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons – with more detail of the aircraft to be announced later.

Business Improvement District chairman Gareth Brown said the show was costing about £450,000 a year to stage – to be offset by park and ride charges, sponsorship, and trade stand income. The aim was for it to be cost-neutral within three years.

The event would help build awareness of the resort, Norfolk and East Anglia.

Crowds will be able to watch the aerial action from the Golden Mile seafront, as well as exploring the local attractions, amusements, tea rooms, cafes and shops, which will all benefit from the show and the additional influx of visitors.

Mr Morrison added the air show was a chance for Great Yarmouth to showcase itself in hosting a new event which has the potential for a major economic boost for the area by swelling visitor numbers as well as providing a free event for the local residents.

Sponsorship is also important with a range of levels and costs from an overall branding partner to corporate and community packages.

The event is also being supported by Great Yarmouth Borough Council, whose mayor and mayoress Malcolm and Donna Bird attended the launch.

The air show also has the backing of the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, whose chairman Mark Pendlington said the air show matched the LEP’s ambitions to drive success, boost the economy and support jobs. He encouraged local businesses to get behind, and get involved in, the event.
